How to augment a Course with AI and Student Personas

As an educator in the field of business analysis, I've always sought innovative ways to enhance the learning experience for my students. My latest experiment (see below) into this endeavor involved leveraging ChatGPT to not only understand the learning process better but also to tailor it to individual student needs. Here's a glimpse into this fascinating journey.
It began with identifying eight phases of a learning process with ChatGPT. These phases ranged from orientation to reflection and evaluation, encompassing the entire spectrum of a student's learning journey. The goal was to understand how students navigate through these phases and how they could be supported in each step.
Building on these phases, I adapted them into a model for student personas. This involved considering various aspects of a student's academic life, personal characteristics, and learning styles. From this model, I created ten distinct student personas. Each persona represented a unique combination of experiences and challenges in their learning journey, reflecting the diversity in learning styles and experiences.
To bring these personas to life, I crafted short profiles for each, outlining their strengths, weaknesses, and unique learning paths. These narratives gave depth to the personas, making them more relatable and real.
The next step was to rework the eight learning phases, focusing on how ChatGPT could assist students in progressing to the next level. This involved tailoring specific strategies and tools offered by ChatGPT to address the unique needs and challenges of each persona.
To delve deeper, I let ChatGPT generate student testimonials. These narratives detailed their difficulties and how an AI-augmented learning process could assist them. It was a way to visualize the practical application of AI in educational settings and its potential to personalize learning.
Shifting to my role as a business analysis teacher, I used ChatGPT to generate use cases for each of the eight phases of the learning experience. The AI model provided insights on how it could facilitate, widen, and deepen students' understanding in various areas of business analysis, such as context analysis, stakeholder management, and scenario planning.
I applied this approach to several key topics of my course, including context analysis, stakeholder analysis, opportunity & risk assessment, scenario analysis, prioritization, planning, and budgeting. For each topic, ChatGPT helped create tables that outlined how it could assist students in different stages of their learning journey.
These tables proved to be a valuable asset, providing me with insights into how AI could aid my students through the eight phases of learning each topic in my course. While they didn't cover everything I teach, they offered a solid understanding of the challenges students might face and how they could be overcome with AI's help.
From this, I derived recommendations for each student persona on how to progress in my course, using ChatGPT's capabilities. Finally, I summarized the professional and digital skills that students would develop through this AI-augmented learning process.
Although this exercise is not exhaustive and may not be perfect from a pedagogical standpoint, I found it incredibly inspiring. It opened my eyes to the potential of AI in education, not just as a tool for information but as a means to personalize and enhance the learning experience.

This post has been cowritten with ChatGPT. Please beware that AI is fascinating and can catch your full attention for hours. Get the balance right! > more?

The Experiment

Me.

List the students' 8 main phases when learning a new topic.

ChatGPT (team edition).

Learning a new topic typically involves several distinct phases. Here are eight main phases students generally go through:

  1. Orientation: This initial phase involves the student becoming aware of the new topic and understanding its relevance. It includes developing an initial interest or recognizing the necessity of learning the topic.
  2. Exploration: Students start to explore the basics of the topic. This phase is marked by curiosity and general overview, often without deep understanding. They gather resources, ask introductory questions, and identify key concepts.
  3. Foundation Building: In this phase, students develop a foundational understanding. They learn fundamental principles, theories, and terms that are essential to the topic. This phase often involves memorization and comprehension of core ideas.
  4. Conceptualization: Students begin to connect different ideas and concepts. They start to understand how different parts of the topic interrelate. This phase is crucial for developing a deeper understanding and is often where critical thinking starts to play a role.
  5. Application: This practical phase involves applying the learned concepts to solve problems or create something new. It's where theoretical knowledge is tested in practical scenarios, which aids in solidifying understanding.
  6. Analysis and Synthesis: Students analyze and synthesize the information, understanding the nuances and complexities of the topic. They might compare and contrast with other knowledge areas, identify patterns, and critique the concepts.
  7. Mastery: In this phase, the student has a thorough understanding and command of the topic. They are able to discuss it confidently, answer complex questions, and might even start to challenge established ideas or propose new perspectives.
  8. Reflection and Evaluation: The final phase involves reflecting on what has been learned, how it was learned, and evaluating the depth and breadth of the knowledge acquired. This can lead to recognizing areas for further learning or consolidation.

Each student might experience these phases differently, and the duration of each phase can vary depending on the complexity of the topic and the individual learning style.

Take these 8 steps as variables for student personas above. define the two extreme experiences and three intermediate ones between them. Start with the assumption that all students are willing to excel in these 8 variables but some of them experience difficulties regarding these variables. Write the list by developing the barriers rather than lack of motivation or engagement.

ok. now create 5 clearly different student personas by playing with these 8 variables. give them names (3 women, 2 men). create a table with the persona names in the rows and the variables in columns. write the retained level of the variable for the persona in each cell. Then add 5 persona but this time for each persona randomly choose the levels for each variable. For each cell add the number of the level (1 lowest, 5 highest) in front of the text. Calculate a score for each persona by summing up each variable. add it to a new column and sort the table descending by this score.
